Q. College Credit/units - Accreditation?

A. Our courses are offered through two of the California State Universities which are accredited by the Western Association Schools and Colleges. (WASC)

Cal State San Bernardino gives CR/NC on a transcript if a student receives 70% or higher in the course. If a student receives the 70%, the course is placed on a transcript and can be issued to the student upon request. Credit is awarded, but there are no units associated with the credit. A grade is not recorded on the transcript. You will need
to ask your school if they will accept this course.

Cal Poly State University is offering a different type of record. They give 4 CEU units for the Basic Math/Pre Algebra and 5 CEU units for the Algebra & Geometry courses. They are not academic units. You should ask your school if they will accept it. To receive the units, you must obtain at least 70% in the course. Cal Poly offers a letter of completion
for those students who receive the units. The letter of completion is on state university letterhead and a grade is recorded. It is a Record of Continuing Education Units which is not the same as an official transcript.
Again, you will need to ask your school if they will accept this course.

Most of the schools take the online courses, but some don't. You just have to ask your counselor or district. The answer depends completely upon admission policies of the other institution. Take the syllabus for the course you want and the letter above and ask which college they prefer you to enroll through.

Q. What class to take if you have been out of school for quite some time.
A. If you have been out of school for many years, you may want to start out at the Basic Math/Pre Algebra level. It is important to not start too high in math because if you don't know the basics, math just becomes frustrating and failing is highly probable.

If you remember how to work with fractions, decimals and Geometry formulas such as area and perimeter start with Elementary Algebra/Algebra l. If you are weak in one of those areas, start with Basic Math/Pre Algebra.

After the Basic Math/Pre Algebra course, Elementary and then Intermediate Algebra should be taken. If you are taking a test such as the GRE or ELM, take the Test Prep Course instead of Intermediate Algebra. The Test Prep course contains Intermediate Algebra, Data Interpretation and Geometry. Test Prep covers everything on tests such as the GRE and ELM. If you feel like you can start higher than the Basic Math/Pre Algebra course, go to the syllabus and see if you recognize all the topics listed. If so, you can enroll in Elementary Algebra. If you think there are several topics from the Basic Math/Pre Algebra course that you are not familiar with, then enroll in the Basic Math/Pre Algebra Course.

Q. What class to take if you are taking the GED.
A. Our Basic Math/Pre Algebra course is designed for students studying for the GED. It covers all the math topics that are needed to be successful on the GED. You will need to take the actual test at your local adult Ed center, but you can study for the test online.

Q. What class to take if you are taking the CBEST
A. The CBEST tests covers Basic Math, Elementary Algebra, Geometry and Data Interpretation. Our two courses: Basic Math/Pre Algebra and Elementary Algebra completely cover all the topics of the CBEST. Our Basic Math/Pre Algebra course includes Geometry and Data Interpretation, so for many students this is enough to pass the CBEST without the additional class of Elementary Algebra. We leave this choice up to the students. You may want to try the test after completing the Basic Math/Pre Algebra, and if you pass you won't need the other.

Q. Credit vs Non credit?
A. When transferring units to a four year college, they usually do not accept credit for any math course below College Algebra. What they do want is verification that you took the lower classes for placement purposes. Most of the schools take the online courses, but some don't. You just have to ask. The answer depends completely upon admission policies of the other institution. Take the syllabus for the course you want and the letter below and ask which college they perfer you enroll through.
