When the Ms Parham the author of the online lessons first started teaching in the late 80's, she became interested in how students learned math. Students always told her the lessons seemed easy when she was explaining them in class, but when they got home it was a different story. Many topics in math are too deep for students to fully understand the first time around. They need to have topics demonstrated several times. Because of curriculum time constraints this is not possible in the classroom, so Ms. Parham began writing booklets to send home with the students.
Every booklet or lesson includes many examples with the English explanation that goes along with each problem.
The lessons start out with the easiest example and then move to the more advanced problems. Between the different levels of difficulty, Ms. Parham created interactive problems for the students to work out. Students need to stop at each level of difficulty, and work out a problem themselves so they know if they have any questions.
Ms. Parham sent the lessons home with the students, and asked them to go over the lessons and let her know where they got lost. The places where the students got lost needed better explanations and/or more examples, so Ms. Parham would add more content. The booklets would then be sent home again with students from the next semester and more content would be added if needed. This continued until there were no more questions, and students reported they understood the entire section.
These booklets were used for the basis of the online math courses. Even though there are thousands of students using the online curriculum, Omega Math gets very few questions.
As of today, thousands of adults and youths have benefited from the online courses and have been able to advance in school and move toward their goals.
Omega Math uses dynamic testing which means each test is different. A student can take each test twice and our system takes the higher of the two scores. This encourages the student to find out what he/she did wrong on the first test before moving ahead to the next chapter.
The classes are self-paced, so students can go back and reread a lesson.
There is homework after each section and an online solution manual that shows each odd problem worked out in detail.
